A fine editorial is to be found in the last edition of The Saturday Paper for 2017, which I finally got around to reading today in the first week of 2018.
The phenomenon which the editorial names – that of the Australian Belligerence – is, I suspect, not simply restricted to the field which the editorial names, i.e. the date of Australia Day and the resistance to any move to change the date, but also extends to any other issue that some folks from a particular perspective find challenging to their worldview. It is, unfortunately in my humble estimation, something to be regretted in Australian society and, inevitably, in Australian public discourse.
Somehow, Australia and Australians need to grapple with the reality of history and social conventions rather than simply become belligerence to their being challenged by new insights, new information, and new facts.
