An Ecclesiological Response Required

As he usually does, Massimo Faggioli takes a slightly different approach to the way in which the Church is called to respond to the scourge of child sexual abuse within the Church, and the even greater scandal of the Church’s woefully deficient response to that scourge, as it continues into the future.

The argument put forward by Faggioli in his latest contribution to La Croix International is that the crisis must be reflected upon in the light of ecclesiology and church reform, i.e. from the perspective of how the Church is actually structured, and how it is perceived to be structured by the wider world. The argument is, further, that this ecclesiological reflection must be rooted firmly in a thorough understanding of history, both of the Church and the reality of the presence of child sexual abuse within the Church.
