This book is simply brilliant. Well-researched and engagingly written, Julia Baird’s Victoria the Queen paints a sympathetic yet honest portrait of the English Queen who would reign over a kingdom and an empire, and provide connections to many of the other royal houses of Europe.
With unprecedented access to the royal archives, Baird had access to previously unseen material and, as I’ve managed, produced a well-researched and documented tome. The notes themselves run to over 100 pages while the bibliography runs to more than 25 pages. It is this background, this bedrock, the book would be less than what it is, and not have the impact on this reader that it did.
Very highly recommended.
