Behind The New Papal Document

In Rome today (9 April) a new Apostolic Exhortation from Pope Francis has been released. Entitled in Latin Gaudete et Exsultate (“Rejoice and be glad”), the apostolic exhortation deals with the subject of the call to holiness in today’s world.

Since at the time of writing it has only been released publicly for less than 30 minutes, I haven’t had a chance to read the document yet. But others have, most notably the various journalists who cover these things for numerous outlets. There will, no doubt, be various commentaries on the new exhortation in coming days, and I will attempt to post some of the better ones as they become available.

Before that, however, the article below from Crux‘s Austen Ivereigh provides some background as to why this document has come to be, answering the question of ‘why now?’ as Ivereigh puts it.
