Close The Camps Now And Stop The Posturing

This is the provocative title of an article by Fr Frank Brennan SJ that appears in today’s edition of Eureka Street, an article that is worth reading not only for its advocacy of a position but also for its analysis of the situation that sits behind that advocacy. As he so often does, Brennan cuts to the core of the issue and calls for change, not because it might or might not garner votes but because it is the right thing to do.

For the good of the refugees who have languished for five years on Nauru and Manus Island, and for the good of the Australian body politic, it’s time to put an end to this inhumane chapter in Australian history. Keep the boats stopped. Bring New Zealand into the mix now. Empty the camps. And fight your elections on matters of substance which don’t impose untold harm on defenceless children. Both Messrs Shorten and Turnbull need to acknowledge that Ged Kearney is right.
