The Future of Catholic …

The article linked below is written by Timothy O’Malley, Director of Education at the McGrath Institute for Church Life located within the University of Notre Dame. He also holds the role of Academic Director of the Notre Dame Center for Liturgy, which is where I first came across his writings both online and via his books.

This essay, which O’Malley offered as the keynote address for the 2022 Catholic Media Association Conference in Portland, Oregon, makes for interesting reading and reflection. Although written in the US context, and specifically the US Catholic journalism context, there is much in O’Malley’s reflections on a crisis of authority that is applicable to a broader Church context, including here in Australia in the aftermath of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, the recently (formally) concluded Plenary Council of the Catholic Church in Australia, and the general downturn in trust in Church and civil institutions.

Reading it for the first time I could not help but think ‘Oh dear, I need to think about this some more’. I hope that you might find as stimulating for thought and reflection.
